I am back to school today. If you are absent, continue working in your packet (today, we are doing the assignments for Thursday, February 26). Check back here for notes on Monday.

Good morning!
The ACT is coming! In only a few more days, you'll be taking it "for real". Here's a test prep site and the YouTube channel I used during ACT Prep if you'd like to review tips and get some more practice in before the big day. For today in English 11B, you will do the work from Wednesday, February 25, so cross off "Wednesday, February 25" in your "workbook" and write "Thursday, February 26" on that page instead. You'll do all the assignments on that page today. To Do List 1. Do warm-up questions #56-60. Check the answers with the sub. 2. Listen to The Call of the Wild and follow along in your Kindles. (Chapter Six) --> You will need to have the sub play CD #3. Please listen to Tracks #1-43 as a whole class and follow along in your Kindles. --> Remember, it is each class' responsibility to keep the Kindles charged. If your Kindle is running out of battery life, make sure it gets plugged back in when you are done reading. Any Kindle that is showing a green light when it is plugged in is fully charged; you can switch the power supply cord from any fully-charged Kindle to one that needs to be charged. --> Keep the laptops plugged in when you're not using them as well! 3. Complete the activities in your "workbook" (vocabulary - please use Learner's Dictionary; sequence of events, character definitions and quality of life chart, plus one P.E.A.). If you are behind on assignments or would like a digital copy of the novel to use when finishing work, click here. See you tomorrow! I've missed you guys and can't wait to see you! :) Have a great day! Good morning! I will for sure be back to school this week on Friday, so I will see you then! :) In the meantime, remember that we are one day behind on assignments due to the snow day you got last Friday. Today you will be working on the things in your "workbook" that are under "Tuesday, February 24".
**Make sure you're keeping up on charging the Kindles and laptops! :) To Do List 1. Do warm-up questions #51-55. | Check your answers with the sub. 2. IF YOU ARE DONE WITH DISCOVERY ED TESTING OR YOU ARE A SENIOR, SKIP AHEAD TO #3. If you were absent yesterday (2/24/15) or need to finish the Discovery Ed test, here is the information you need to get caught up: Only JUNIORS will be taking the Discovery Ed test. Your score on this test goes into your records at Lee High School, so it's important to take your time and work carefully on this test. This is not a partner or group activity; move away from classmates that you will feel tempted to talk to or who will distract you from doing your best. To take the test, click on your hour. DO NOT TYPE YOUR NAME. Just type x x ("x space x") and then choose your name from the list that comes up to work on the test. Fourth Hour Test Fifth Hour Test Sixth Hour Test 3. Take notes and add them to your Cornell notes pages. The notes are posted below. 4. Complete the four questions in your "workbook". Read each question carefully. All questions required DETAILED answers. If you need more space, feel free to complete your questions on notebook paper and staple the paper into your booklet (label your notebook paper with today's date just in case it would come loose). 5. If you need more to do, you can work on vocabulary (definitions) for Chapter Six. Make sure to plug in the laptops when you are done using them so that they are ready to use tomorrow. YOUR WORKBOOKS WILL BE DUE NEXT WEEK MONDAY (the last page is what we will do on Monday). I will be grading workbooks in the afternoon after you take your ACT tests on Tuesday and Wednesday. I should have grades completely updated by next Thursday/Friday (I appreciate your patience while I get caught up after being gone!). :) If you are very behind on Call of the Wild assignments, you have the rest of this week/weekend to finish your work. Double-check all of your PEAs and other work to make sure it is at a high level. Exam week and report cards are coming! Have a great day! I can't wait to see all of you on Friday! :) Cornell Notes collective memory - a collection of memories passed from one generation to the next. -- When the author mentions "collective memory," he's actually speaking about the instincts that animals are born with that help them to survive (things that they are born knowing that they don't have to be taught). moral - what someone believes is acceptable for him or herself to do immoral - what someone believes is unacceptable to him or herself to do -- In the Klondike, the only "moral code" is "Kill or be killed," "Might makes right," and "Survival of the fittest" (the author refers to all of this as "The Law of Club and Fang" in Chapter 2). Fighting and killing might be immoral in civilized society, but in the wild, it is the only way to determine who is the strongest and who will survive. You will see how this plays out in Chapters Six and Seven! Good morning!
Today, the JUNIORS will be taking the Discovery Ed test. Just type x x ("x space x") and then choose your name from the list that comes up to begin the test. **USE THE LINKS I POSTED UNDER WEDNESDAY'S ASSIGNMENTS. The links only last 10 hours, so the one I poster for Tuesday have expired.** SENIORS -- You are not required by Lee High School to take this test. Today would be a great opportunity to make up work for my class or for another class before exams come! Check with the sub to see if you can go to another teacher's classroom to make up missing work; she may want to call that teacher first to get permission for you to go. Make sure to plug in the laptops when you are done using them so that they are ready to use tomorrow. Have a great day! Good morning!
I hope you enjoyed your three-day weekend. I was excited for you when I saw that you got a snow day due to windchill on Friday. It's always nice to have a little break during the long winter! This puts you a little behind schedule again, but the only thing you will have to do is change the dates in your "workbooks". The actual To Do lists will stay the same. My plan for this week is to be back to school by this Friday. My husband is doing great and should be released from the hospital very soon; yesterday, he was feeling so well that he sat in his hospital bed and was working on building a small computer from a kit that he bought at Radio Shack before we came here. Yup, he's a bit of a geek. :) For today, you will do the work from Friday, February 20, so cross off "Friday, February 20" in your "workbook" and write "Monday, February 23" on that page instead. You'll do all the assignments on that page today and you will start your Discovery Ed testing tomorrow. To Do List 1. Do warm-up questions #46-50. Check the answers with the sub. 2. Listen to The Call of the Wild and follow along in your Kindles. (Chapter Five - it says Three in your workbook, but that's a mistake...sorry. :) ) --> You will need to have the sub play CD #2. Please listen to Tracks #51-99 as a whole class and follow along in your Kindles. Check back for my post tomorrow with your instructions for how to access the Discovery Ed test. :) See you very soon! :) Good morning! My mother-in-law snapped this photo of my husband and me in the hospital yesterday. He had a really good day yesterday; he napped on and off, but also got in some exercise (walking laps around the floor), and we ended up watching some Netflix together. Today they're going to bump him up to the next level of food -- goodbye, broth; hello, cream of chicken! We'll see how that goes. At this point, your class should be back on track with the schedule in your "workbooks". If you were absent yesterday, feel free to ask the sub to replay Chapter Four. Your class can also ask for a replay if you feel like it would help you with the questions. You can listen along while you do your assignments. **Make sure you're keeping up on charging the Kindles and laptops! :) To Do List 1. Do warm-up questions #41-45. | Check your answers with the sub. 2. Take notes and add them to your Cornell notes pages. The notes are posted below. 3. Complete the two questions in your "workbook". Read each question carefully. All questions required DETAILED answers. If you need more space, feel free to complete your questions on notebook paper and staple the paper into your booklet (label your notebook paper with today's date just in case it would come loose). 4. If you need more to do, you can work on vocabulary for Chapter Five. If you are behind on work, today would be a good day to get caught up because you don't have as many questions to do as usual. 5. If you need more to do, feel free to work ahead and complete the vocabulary (definitions) for Chapter Five. Have a wonderful day today! Stay warm! :) Cornell Notes conflict - any struggle against opposing forces; usually, the main character struggles against some other force. Conflict is what drives each and every story. - Without conflict, characters have no reason to grow. Ex. Buck's conflicts with the humans, other dogs, and challenges presented by the environment of the Yukon Territory are causing him to grow and change as a character. He would be the same dog he was in Chapter One if none of this had happened to him. Types of Conflict: 1. man vs. man ("man" just represents the main character, so Buck in a conflict against another dog is actually man vs. man conflict because it is two characters in conflict against each other) 2. man vs. self (overcoming an internal problem or challenge) 3. man vs. nature (overcoming challenges caused by nature such as storms, rough weather, or surviving in the outdoors) 4. man vs. society (rebelling against the structure of the society that one lives in) Ex. In your notes, write down one example of "man vs. man" conflict from the novel and one example of "man vs. nature" conflict. Good morning! I got an e-mail from a student this morning asking when I would be back; I am thinking most likely late next week. I heard from Mrs. Snyder that Mrs. Haverkamp wasn't with you yesterday; I will check with Ms. Julie in the office to find out if she changed her start date because she was supposed to begin with you yesterday. If I find out anything, I will let you know. Remember, the sub is there primarily to take attendance and help you if you have any major problems -- you all are old enough to hold jobs and drive, so I'm trusting that you are capable of understanding and following my instructions for you no matter who is in the room with you each day. You are normally pretty awesome for subs, so I am keeping faith in your abilities. It means a lot that I am able to take care of my husband without worrying too much that you guys are okay. :) Remember, you can always e-mail me or comment on my blog posts if you have questions about the assignments! :)
For those of you currently in ACT Prep Reading: Mrs. Snyder is trying her very best with the lesson plans I left for her. Please don't worry; I will go over the main points when I return just to make sure that nothing important was missed. :) Remember, that class is Credit/No Credit; you can only miss one assignment in the reading rotation, so if you're absent, make sure you ask Mrs. Snyder for things to make up so that you don't fail the class due to missing work. Also, check with your other ACT Prep teachers to make sure you got credit for their rotations so that there are no surprises when report cards come out in a few weeks. You can still make up things for them, I think. I will be adjusting your To Do lists for English 11B each day this week; feel free to compare what I wrote below and make changes in your "workbook" To Do Lists so that you know what you need to have accomplished for each day in order to stay on track. For TODAY (Wednesday) 1. Do warm-up questions #31-40 (yup, 10 questions!). Check the answers with the sub. 2. Listen to The Call of the Wild and follow along in your Kindles. (Chapter Four) --> You will need to have the sub play CD #2. Please listen to Tracks #24-50 as a whole class and follow along in your Kindles. 4. ADD IN: Do question #3 that was on the page for Tuesday, February 17. Keep in mind that it is a PEA and you will need evidence from the text. 5. CROSS OFF the Cornell notes pages for Tuesday, February 17. I'll get you caught up on notes tomorrow. If you are behind on assignments or would like a digital copy of the novel to use when finishing work, click here. Check back for my post tomorrow with your updated schedule for Wednesday! :) Good morning! It's been three days since I posted last since you enjoyed a three-day weekend. My husband had a successful weekend of healing and got to have the much-hated NG (naso-gastric) tube removed from his nose yesterday (some of you who follow along on my Facebook may have seen the pic of his smiling face that I posted yesterday!). He is feeling tons better today without that thing irritating his throat. He is on track to be discharged in another week, I think.
I noticed over the weekend when I was going through your assignments for this week that I actually had an assignment in your "workbook" for Monday, but you didn't have school. I will be adjusting your To Do lists each day this week; feel free to compare what I wrote below and make changes in your "workbook" To Do Lists so that you know what you need to have accomplished for each day in order to stay on track. For TODAY (Tuesday) 1. Do warm-up questions #26-30. Check the answers with the sub. 2. Listen to The Call of the Wild and follow along in your Kindles. (Chapter Three) --> You will need to have the sub play CD #1. Please listen to Tracks #73-99 as a whole class and follow along in your Kindles. Then, play CD #2 and listen to Tracks #1-23. That will get you through all of Chapter Three. 4. ADD IN: Do questions #1 AND #2 that were on the page for Tuesday, February 17. Keep in mind that they are PEAs and you will need evidence from the text to complete them. If you are behind on assignments or would like a digital copy of the novel to use when finishing work, click here. Check back for my post tomorrow with your Cornell notes and updated schedule for Wednesday! :) Good morning and happy "Friday the 13th"!
I'm hanging out in the hotel lobby this morning while I type this post to you. It's freezing here in Cleveland and a lot of the city schools are closed due to the windchill (10 to 20 below 0). My first mission today is to brave the icy temperatures and find the new version of the Nintendo 3DS for my husband; it comes out today apparently and that should keep him entertained while he sits around in his hospital bed resting up. We'll be celebrating Valentine's Day in the hospital tomorrow. One thing we promised to each other in our marriage vows was to be faithful to each other "in sickness and in health." Even when things are hard, it's important to be there for the other person because that's when they need you the most. :) Remember that you will have a three-day weekend this weekend! You will have Monday off due to Washington's Birthday (which is also sometimes called Presidents' Day). Johvan will be coming to work with you on your writing today. When you're not meeting with him, you have some assignments to do in your "workbook". Here's the plan for today. **If you were absent on Thursday, feel free to ask the sub to replay Chapter Two. Your class can also ask for a replay if you feel like it would help you with the questions. You can listen along while you do your assignments. **Make sure you're keeping up on charging the Kindles and laptops! :) To Do List 1. Do warm-up questions #21-25. | Check your answers with the sub. 2. Take notes and add them to your Cornell notes pages. The notes are posted below. 3. Complete the seven questions in your "workbook". Read each question carefully. There are no PEAs today but all questions required DETAILED answers. If your answers are not in the form of complete sentences or are one sentence without much explanation, I can guarantee you'll lose points. If you need more space, feel free to complete your questions on notebook paper and staple the paper into your booklet (label your notebook paper with today's date just in case it would come loose). 4. If you need more to do, you can work on vocabulary for Chapter Two. Cornell Notes characterization - the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character There are TWO types of characterizations. direct characterization --> tells the audience what the personality of the character is indirect characterization --> shows things that reveal the personality of a character There are five different methods of indirect characterization. 1. SPEECH: What does the character say? How does the character think? 2. THOUGHTS: What is revealed through the character's thoughts and feelings? 3. EFFECT ON (OR BY) OTHERS: What is revealed through the character's effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in relation to the character? 4. ACTIONS: What does the character do? How does the character behave? 5. LOOKS: What does the character look like? How does the character dress? **Notice that the beginning letters of each of these words form the acronym STEAL. You can use STEAL to remember this for the final test. :) **Here's something you can look at to review characterization in greater detail. character arc - how a character changes, learns, or grows throughout the story Sometimes a character can grow by *staying the same*. This means that they just become more committed to being the type of person they seemed to be at the beginning of the story. Ex. For your example, please tell one way that Buck has changed between chapter one and chapter two. Good morning! It's a cold morning here in Cleveland, OH. Not much has changed with my husband in the past day; the healing process takes time and the best things he can do are rest, exercise when he's feeling up to it, and try to be patient. His surgeon will be checking up on him personally tomorrow (she has been at a conference Tuesday through today), so it will be exciting to see her again and hear her thoughts. She's amazing! I snapped a pic of my husband's IV pole yesterday since it was *packed* with all sorts of things. They had seven different pumps running at the same time with all sorts of vitamins and medications for him. The yellow bag is his liquid "dinner" that I was telling you about. Even though he had surgery, it's not safe for him to try eating yet until his digestive system is awake, so he's lucky that he can keep getting calories this way because it helps with energy and healing! I hope you're looking forward to finding out what happens next in The Call of the Wild. Here are your assignments for today. To Do List 1. Do warm-up questions #16-20. Check the answers with the sub. 2. Listen to The Call of the Wild and follow along in your Kindles. (Chapter Two) --> You will need to have the sub play CD #1. Please listen to Tracks #39-72 as a whole class and follow along in your Kindles. Check back for my post tomorrow with your Cornell notes for Friday! :) |
