Unit 2: Argumentative Analysis | Argument in Advertising
There are three steps necessary for a good argument analysis. These are:
(1) Identify what the argument is.
(2) Explain what techniques are used to make the argument.
(3) Explain whether or not the argument is effective and WHY.
Today, you are going to analyze two print ads of your choice (found below my example) and analyze the argument in each ad using the steps above. By the end of the hour, you should turn in two lengthy paragraphs (one for each ad).

Today, you are going to analyze two print ads of your choice (found below my example) and analyze the argument in each ad using the steps above. By the end of the hour, you should turn in two lengthy paragraphs (one for each ad).
Here is an example analyzing the ad to the left. You MAY NOT use this ad as part of your assignment. Notice that I use PEA format (Point, Evidence, Analysis) in my paragraph. Also, notice the length of my paragraph. I thoroughly examine both the image and the text. Vocabulary note: "Copy" is a word that refers to the text used in a print ad.
The ad for Belvedere Vodka uses sexist tactics to promote their brand of alcohol. The makers of Belvedere want consumers to believe that their alcohol is pleasant to drink. They objectify women and trivialize rape in order to prove this point. Their ad uses the copy, "Unlike some people, Belvedere always goes down smoothly." These words refer to the image in the ad, in which a young man (probably the age of a college student) is shown holding on to a young woman who looks as though she is trying to get away. The young man is smiling, which is evidence that he is enjoying the situation. However, the young woman's expression looks afraid, as though she is scared of him and wants him to let go of her. The idea implied by this ad is that he is trying to force her to "go down" on him. The makers of the vodka promise that drinking their brand will be much easier than forcing a woman to commit a sex act. The ad trivializes rape. It subconsciously teaches both young men and women that sex-related violence is acceptable and even fun for men, even if women don't enjoy it. This argument may be effective due to the fact that some people still find misogynistic humor to be funny; thinking about the double play on the words "goes down" in the ad may be seen as clever or humorous by some consumers. However, the makers of Belvedere should also realize that rape is a serious problem in the United States and especially on college campuses, where drinking and sexual violence often go hand-in-hand. They risk turning off some consumers with an ad that so obviously promotes rape and violence.

Please choose TWO from the following images to analyze. Make sure to hand in your analysis paragraphs at the end of the hour.
