oral tradition - stories are passed down to the next generation through speaking, rather than writing

trickster - a common character in Native American stories;  uses his/her great intelligence or skill to play tricks or disobey normal rules of behavior

four types of stories - The four most common types of stories from Native American traditions are: (1) the journey of a hero, (2) trickster tales, (3) changes in nature, and (4) creation myths.
